This custom canvas improved the moment to moment quality of life for Helen and is now used as a redirect communication tool strategically placed on the wall in the common area of her memory care unit.

As a new resident, Helen was reluctant to engage and dine with others. SparkingJoy team member Sue met with Helen, her family and caregivers to provide an innovative visual solution to the challenge of transitioning to a new home environment. It was noted that family members bring their dogs when visiting and Helen responds to them with great joy.

Sue suggested finding photos of family members with their dogs.

Sue crafted a collage of these photos, placed text and left white space for Helen to draw on -- sparking interaction and imagination. This custom canvas is now hanging in the dining common area of her memory care unit. Caregivers now redirect Helen to her canvas as needed as it evokes a positive emotion. A simple modification to her new environment. A custom oversized visual cue helped to improve the moment to moment quality of Helen's life and her caregivers. What once involved what was described as '20 minute episodes of confusion, fear, and agitation' is now a 1-3 minute positive interaction.
